Genetically identical cells vary in surprising ways, according to a spatially resolved proteomic map of the human cell cycle. Researchers used a single-cell proteogenomics approach, and identified hundreds of novel cell-cycle proteins and their corresponding transcripts. Additional analysis found many cell-cycle proteins had oncogenic or anti-oncogenic properties. “Fully capturing cellular proliferative states requires single-cell multi-omic measurements, which we anticipate will be needed both in basic research and clinical settings,” the authors conclude. The data are now integrated into the Human Protein Atlas. (News release)
